This is beautiful. I've tried doing more intricate carvings, but I always run into the issue of preserving the artwork once it's done. What's your secret?

I know this was from several years ago, but I just found it. Awesome pumpkin.

Though I'm quite curious what it looked like several days later when a pumpkin starts getting mushy. did he look like grandpa depp or something?

hehe thanks...
hmm, good question, i think he turned out rather unspectacular, but not like grandpa depp ;). more like just something unrecognizable.

this year's pumpkin my mom carved using power tools. a drill for the eyes, chainsaw for the mouth. and put a fedora on it's head. It looked like a mafia pumpkin who got in too many fist brawls. and even more so now that it's getting lumpy

dunno how you replicated it but replicate it you did.

yeah it is.
there is a very simple answer to this: all those pumpkin carvings are based on patterns which of course means, that if you use the same pattern as somebody else you should at least theoretically get the same result. :)

first of all: thank you very much, all of you!
@ JizzeqUR: I did the lighter parts by shading the pumpkin a little, meaning I partially removed the pumpkin flesh (and skin) to thin it. it's pretty easy, really. all you need is a lot of time and patience and of course you have to enjoy doing this ;).
